Spot Treatments and Spill Cleanup

The best way to treat a spot or spill is to do so as quickly as possible and to treat the spill or spot accordingly. There are six key items to have on hand to help treat spots and spills before they become permanent. These include vinegar, baking soda, dawn dish detergent, hydrogen peroxide and water. Bleach should not be used on carpeting as it is a very strong chemical that can damage carpet fibers and home carpet cleaning machines. Vinegar and baking soda (not mixed together) both work great to alleviate spots and act as a natural odor remover. Vinegar is great for treating pet urine. It can be applied using a cloth. If applicable use a shop vac or tool such as the Bissell spot bot to remove fluids. With any liquid spot or spill blot as much of the liquid up as possible. Do so gently as to prevent agitating the substance into the carpet. Continue to blot the spill, then apply the vinegar with a rag and gently blot the area. To prevent the stain from resurfacing use white paper towels or a white cloth and lay the absorbent cloth onto the spot. Place a book or weighted item onto the spot over night. This will help to pull any remaining liquid from the spill to prevent the stain from resurfacing. This same process can be used with other spills and the cleaning solution that works best.
